The Leverage Devotional by Apostle Segun Obadje 27 January 2024: God Is Love
Topic: God Is Love
1 John 4:7-8,16; John 3:16
1 John 4:7-8 “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.
Leverage Devotional For Today Message:
God is love. To know God is to know love. To be born of God is to be born of love. The depth of God’s love is vividly displayed through the sacrificial gift of His only begotten Son, revealing the profound extent of His compassion for humanity. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.” This limitless love is also evident in God’s generosity towards Adam, who, as a testament to God’s benevolence and graciousness, was created in God’s image and received dominion over the universe. Despite the disobedience of man to God’s will, God did not stop loving man. God, in His benevolence, still sent His only Son to atone for our sins. Romans 5:8 says that “…God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” What a remarkable demonstration of love! God does not just love; He is love. Love is His nature.
Just as you are born of God, you are born of love. This means the same love nature of God is also your nature. God has revealed His love to us and He also expects us to share that love with others. “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” (1 John 4:11). This is how we prove that we are truly God’s children (John 13:35). To love others, we first need to know and believe in God’s love because we can’t share what we don’t possess. By understanding and meditating on God’s love for us, we learn how to extend that love to others. Therefore, beloved, let the goodness of God fill you, and love will naturally flow from you. This is the only authentic way to show that you are His. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. You are love, just like your Father, so be kind, merciful and gracious unto others.
My Solid Front (Confession)
Father, I’m grateful for Your love. Thank You for the gift of Your only Son, Jesus. Thank You, Father, for the grace to walk in love. I acknowledge your goodness towards me, and I do not take it for granted in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Further Meditation: Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 13:1-13
8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
