TOPIC: A Prayer To Know God More

READ: Psalm 119: 33-43 (NKJV)

  1. Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it [to] the end.
  2. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with [my] whole heart.
  3. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.
  4. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.
  5. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, [And] revive me in Your way.
  6. Establish Your word to Your servant, Who [is devoted] to fearing You.
  7. Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your judgments [are] good.
  8. Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.
  9. Let Your mercies come also to me, O LORD — Your salvation according to Your word.
  10. So shall I have an answer for him who reproaches me, For I trust in Your word.
  11. And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, For I have hoped in Your ordinances.

THE MESSAGE:

The Psalmist in this passage expresses a deep desire to know God more and do His will. He prays that the Lord will teach him, give him an understanding of His word, and enable him to walk in God’s ways (verses 33-35). Then he prays to have a proper disposition towards God’s statutes, rather than covetousness (verse 36).

Having a proper focus in life and personal revival are addressed next (verse 37), followed by a request for the fulfilment of God’s promises in his life (verse 38). The prayers of the Psalmist are similar in many respects to the personal prayer of Moses in Exodus 33: 13, the desire of Paul in Philippians 3: 8-9, and his prayer for the brethren in Ephesians 1: 17-19.

Like the Psalmist, do you desire to know God more, and make a personal commitment to do His will? It is important that you commit to a daily study of God’s word and seeking His face in prayers. In this way, you will not be ashamed to testify about Christ before kings and other people (verse 46).

PRAYER: Teach me O Lord, the way of Your states.
