The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 4 July 2024 – An Evil Project Terminated

TOPIC: An Evil Project Terminated

READ: Genesis 11:1-9 (NKJV)

  1. Now the whole earth had one language and one speech.
  2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.
  3. Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake [them] thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar.
  4. And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top [is] in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
  5. But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built.
  6. And the LORD said, “Indeed the people [are] one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
  7. “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”
  8. So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city.
  9. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.

THE MESSAGE:

The British luxury ocean-liner, Titanic, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 14 April, 1912, during its first voyage to New York from England. Out of the 2200 people on board, about 1500 perished in the disaster. Before the unfortunate voyage, someone had reportedly boasted that “Even God cannot sink this ship.”

In the same way, the people of Babel embarked on a gigantic project of building a city and tower that would prevent them from being “scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth” (verse 4). This was in direct contrast to God’s will that people should “fill the earth” (Genesis 8:17, 9:1). God therefore confused their language, causing them to abandon the project and scatter “over the face of all the earth” (verses 6-8). Some nations embark on projects that directly oppose God.

A recent example is the opposition to the worship of God in some communist countries. Thank God for the crumbling of the former Soviet Union which paved the way for the penetration of the Gospel in those areas. Are there philosophies, political systems, social and economic policies and scientific theories that directly or indirectly oppose the word of God which you hold unto? Repent today!

PRAYER: Oh God, help me to take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10: 5).
