The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 24 March 2024 – A Great Humility

TOPIC: A Great Humility

READ: John 12: 12-22 (NKJV)

  1. The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
  2. took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed [is] He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ The King of Israel!”
  3. Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
  4. “Fear not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
  5. His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him and [that] they had done these things to Him.
  6. Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.
  7. For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
  8. The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
  9. Now there were certain Greeks among those who came up to worship at the feast.
  10. Then they came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
  11. Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.

THE MESSAGE:

Today is Palm Sunday, celebrated in remembrance of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. One of the major ways kings and wealthy men of this world demonstrate influence is by riding exotic cars, living in great mansions, and boasting of the monies in their bank accounts. These are the ways of the earthly rich! However, Jesus the King of kings, demonstrated His own personality by humility. He rode on a donkey colt and not in a chariot drawn by a horse, which could have revealed His majesty. He shunned the ‘show’ and chose a humble way. The colt He rode on was even borrowed!

Jesus refused to go in the ways of the world, but emptied all the glory He shared with the Father for him to fulfil the purpose of God on earth to save mankind from sin (2 Corinthians 8: 9). No wonder He was glorified and offered a name above every other names (Philippians 2: 5-9). We, his followers and ambassadors on earth, should follow his path of humility. Our humility in the church, place of work and the neighbourhood does not remove His glory from our lives but rather adds more (Psalm 138: 6). Humble yourself and God will lift you.

PRAYER: Lord, please give me the spirit of humility that I may live a life that pleases You.
