The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 23 April 2024 – Keep Yourselves From Sin

TOPIC: Keep Yourselves From Sin

READ: 1 John 5: 14-21 (NKJV)

  1. Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
  2. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
  3. If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin [which does] not [lead] to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not [leading] to death. There is sin [leading] to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.
  4. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not [leading] to death.
  5. We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
  6. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies [under the sway of] the wicked one.
  7. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
  8. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

THE MESSAGE:

Sin is the worst spiritual poison which destroys the soul; it is a great danger to eternal life. Never seek after any kind of sin for all unrighteousness is sin. God’s verdict is simple: The soul that sins shall die (Ezekiel 18: 4). The words of God are the only principles that will guide our earthly pilgrimage and once disobeyed, the consequences are detrimental. Anyone born of God does not sin; he that commits sins is of the devil. However, if a child of God sins, he must confess the sin and repent, Jesus is the last sacrifice for sins (Hebrews 10: 26-27).

Sin is transgression of the law; this includes moral, religious and national rebellion, revolt, evil tendencies, unrighteous deeds, sinful propensities, wickedness, moral decadence, corruption, prostitution, spiritual harlotry, religious syncretism and defilement of the body. We must bear the fruits that befit our repentance because faith without works is dead; he that calls upon the name of God must depart from iniquity (2 Timothy 2: 19). Besetting sins are dangerous little foxes that spoil the vine; if we do not let them go, they will find us out on the judgment day. We must not continue in sins that grace abound.

PRAYER: God, in Your mercy, deliver us from all evils in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
