The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 2 July 2024 – Be Fruitful And Multiply

TOPIC: Be Fruitful And Multiply

READ: Genesis 10: 15-32 (NKJV)

  1. Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth;
  2. the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite;
  3. the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite;
  4. the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed.
  5. And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.
  6. These [were] the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands [and] in their nations.
  7. And [children] were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder.
  8. The sons of Shem [were] Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram.
  9. The sons of Aram [were] Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash.
  10. Arphaxad begot Salah, and Salah begot Eber.
  11. To Eber were born two sons: the name of one [was] Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name [was] Joktan.
  12. Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah,
  13. Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah,
  14. Obal, Abimael, Sheba,
  15. Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these [were] the sons of Joktan.
  16. And their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.
  17. These [were] the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.
  18. These [were] the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

THE MESSAGE:

The fulfilment of God’s command in Genesis 1: 28 and 9: 2 is here demonstrated. The expansion of the remainder of the lineage of Ham is shown in verses 15 to 20, while that of Shem is listed in verses 21 to 31. A notable member of the lineage of Ham is Canaan, whose descendants occupied the Promised Land that was later possessed by Israel. Most of the present day occupants of the Middle East, the Arabian Peninsula and the surroundings, are mainly descendants of Shem and Ham (through Canaan). With the passage of time and increase in population, people dispersed in different directions, thereby fulfilling the word of God (verse 18, verse 20, verse 32).

The name, Peleg, in verse 25 means “division”, which may be a reference to the division of languages described in Genesis 11: 1-9. Aram in verses 22 and 23 refers to Syria, one of the nations with a long history and which played prominent roles in Biblical history. We can see that God is faithful in ensuring that His word is fulfilled. He is faithful and fulfilled the promise to multiply Noah’s descendants. Are you depending on Him today to fulfill His gracious promises to you?

PRAYER: Oh Lord, make me to be fruitful in every area of my life in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
