The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 14 September 2024 — Crowned With Glory And Honour

TOPIC: Crowned With Glory And Honour

READ: Psalm 8: 1-9 (NKJV)

  1. To the Chief Musician. On the instrument of Gath. A Psalm of David. O LORD, our Lord, How excellent [is] Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!
  2. Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
  3. When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
  4. What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?
  5. For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor.
  6. You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all [things] under his feet,
  7. All sheep and oxen — Even the beasts of the field,
  8. The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas.
  9. O LORD, our Lord, How excellent [is] Your name in all the earth!

Today is Holy Cross Day! This psalm extols God for His wonderful nature and the very high state to which He has put man. The phrase, “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” is repeated in verses 1 and 9. How do you feel when you consider the wonderful works of God in creation as you look at the earth with its wonders and biodiversity, or the countless heavenly bodies that beautify the skies (verse 9)? Surely, the heavens declare the glory of God! (Psalm 9:1). God gave man an exalted and unparalleled position, just a little lower than the angels (verse 5). God made man in His own image, and showered marvellous creative powers on him, with dominion over all other things (verses 6-8; Genesis 1: 27-28).

If you are born again, you are even positioned with Christ in the heavenly places, far above principalities and powers (Ephesians 1: 20; 2: 6). You can do many things that Christ did, and even more (John 14: 12). But you must depend on Christ to maintain this exalted position, otherwise you will be nothing more than a vapour or a single breath (John 15: 5; Psalm 146: 4; James 4: 14).

PRAYER: O Lord, thank You that I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
