The Daily Fountain Devotional of the Church Of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) 8 September 2024 — Trust In God

TOPIC: Trust In God

READ: Psalm 56:1-13 (NKJV)

  1. To the Chief Musician. Set to “The Silent Dove in Distant Lands.” A Michtam of David when the Philistines captured him in Gath. Be merciful to me, O God, for man would swallow me up; Fighting all day he oppresses me.
  2. My enemies would hound [me] all day, For [there are] many who fight against me, O Most High.
  3. Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.
  4. In God (I will praise His word), In God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?
  5. All day they twist my words; All their thoughts [are] against me for evil.
  6. They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life.
  7. Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God!
  8. You number my wanderings; Put my tears into Your bottle; [Are they] not in Your book?
  9. When I cry out [to You,] Then my enemies will turn back; This I know, because God [is] for me.
  10. In God (I will praise [His] word), In the LORD (I will praise [His] word),
  11. In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?
  12. Vows [made] to You [are binding] upon me, O God; I will render praises to You,
  13. For You have delivered my soul from death. [Have You] not [kept] my feet from falling, That I may walk before God In the  light of the living?

David prayed for deliverance while under the Philistine captivity in Gath. In 1 Samuel 21: 10-14, he fled from King Saul to the King of Gath. When he overheard people making references to the aftermath of his victory over Goliath, he was very afraid and left the city. In 1 Samuel 27: 1-12, he fled from Saul again to the King of Gath where he spent over a year.

When he tried to join the Philistine army in battle against Israel, the Philistine commanders refused for security reasons. This psalm captures the personal struggles, fears and prayers that David went through under the Philistine captivity. Ashamed enemies were all around him, tracing his every move (verses 2, 6). They twisted his words, and waited to kill him (verse 5). All these made him afraid (verse 3). He therefore cried to God in deep prayer (verse 9). He trusted God knowing that He is able to deliver him from all evil (verses 4, 10, 11). He made vows to God and determined to fulfil them (verse 12). Do you find yourself in a similar situation? Are you afraid of certain prevailing circumstances or challenging situations? Trust in God and He will surely deliver you.

PRAYER: In Thee, O Lord, I have put my trust, let me not be ashamed.
